The character of this route
This route grew out of a specific objection: someone who works in the mountains for a living does not want to spend half the trip in yet more high alpine terrain. So the entire western Sichuan leg is gone – no Chongqing, no Rilong, no Danba, no second domestic flight. Instead the trip starts straight in Yunnan and, after a compact mountain week, makes a deliberate change of scenery: from the 3,000-metre Tibetan highlands into the subtropical karst cones of Guangxi.
The second idea is rail. Apart from the short feeder flight from Kunming to Shangri-La, everything runs on tracks – Yunnan is now fully covered by high-speed rail, and the Kunming → Guilin → Shenzhen → Hong Kong axis is one of the most comfortable rail corridors in China. No driver, no 包车, no pass-or-tunnel decision each morning.
What remains is a trip with two clear halves: up top, trekking above Tiger Leaping Gorge and two old towns; down below, a boat ride on the Li River, climbing and cycling among the karst towers, and the rice terraces of Longji. Then the coast.
📊 The route in numbers
- Stops

- Highest night
- 3,200 m (Shangri-La)
- Highest point on foot
- about 2,670 m, the High Trail above the gorge
- Driver
- none – only local transfers and boats
- Domestic flights
- 1 feeder Kunming → Shangri-La
- Rail kilometres
- about 2,400 km
- Total ascent
- about 2,400 m, almost all on the High Trail
🎶 Festival on day 19 included
Saturday 14 Nov falls in Hong Kong – when Shi Fu Miz runs at the Tai Tong Organic EcoPark in Yuen Long, four stages. Because the route enters via Shenzhen, the approach to the festival site is short. Details and tickets in Route 4.
🔀 Why this route makes sense versus Route 8
The objection was fair. Route 8 opens with Chongqing and a western Sichuan loop (Rilong, Danba, Hailuogou) and needs two domestic flights for it – Chengdu → Shangri-La and Dali → Shenzhen. Route 9 drops the whole Sichuan block and replaces the second flight with a rail axis. Three concrete improvements:
- One flight fewer. Only the feeder Kunming → Shangri-La (1 h 20) remains. The international flight lands in Kunming anyway – Shangri-La (DIG) has no direct flights from Europe.
- No double dose of high mountains. Instead of western Sichuan and northern Yunnan, just the one mountain week in Yunnan, then the deliberate contrast: karst instead of snow.
- The Guilin area added. The Li River, the Yangshuo karst and the Longji rice terraces – and from there a clean 3-hour train straight to Shenzhen.
Honest caveat: there is no direct train Shangri-La → Guilin. The way runs back down the Yunnan southern axis to Kunming and from there by G train to Guilin (fastest about 4.5 h, usually 5–8 h). It is a long rail leg, but not a flight – and it sits exactly in the "south then east" logic.
20 days
Day by day
27 October to 15 November 2026. The High Trail sits deliberately early, while the legs are fresh; the karst half afterwards is recovery with a view.
| Day | Date | Place | Activity | Overnight | Transport |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tue 27 Oct | Kunming | Arrival of the international flight, 1,890 m. Evening night market and Yunnan food: crossing-the-bridge rice noodles, wild mushrooms. The altitude here is the gentle lead-in to Shangri-La. | Kunming | Flight arrival |
| 2 | Wed 28 Oct | ✈️ → Shangri-La | ✈️ Short feeder flight Kunming → Shangri-La (DIG), about 1 h 20. ⚠️ On arrival day at 3,200 m take it slow on purpose: Dukezong old town on foot, the great prayer wheel, drink plenty, no alcohol. | Shangri-La (3,200 m) | ✈️ approx. 1.5 h |
| 3 | Thu 29 Oct | Shangri-La | 📍 Songzanlin, the largest Tibetan monastery in Yunnan, in the morning before the groups. In the afternoon the Napahai wetland, flat by rental bike – black-necked cranes winter there from November, start of the season, nothing guaranteed. A second day at altitude as acclimatisation before the trek. | Shangri-La | Bus, bicycle |
| 4 | Fri 30 Oct | High Trail, stage 1 | 🚗 to Qiaotou, then 🥾📍 up onto the High Trail above Tiger Leaping Gorge. The 28 bends are the hard part: around 900 m of ascent in one go, up to about 2,670 m. After that a balcony trail with a constant view of the north face of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Night at the Halfway Guesthouse. | Halfway Guesthouse | 🚗 3 h + 🥾 6 h |
| 5 | Sat 31 Oct | Stage 2 → Lijiang | 🥾📍 From Halfway across the open flank to Tina's, then the steep descent to Tiger Leaping Stone at the Yangtze – ladders, chains, loud rapids – and back up. Around midday 🚗 to Lijiang, 2,400 m. Old town in the evening. | Lijiang | 🥾 5 h + 🚗 2 h |
| 6 | Sun 1 Nov | Lijiang | 🧭 A rest day with substance: the canals and rooftops of the Naxi old town before the day visitors, 📍 the view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the Black Dragon Pool. Put your legs up before the second half. | Lijiang | On foot |
| 7 | Mon 2 Nov | 🚄 → Dali | 🚄 A short train south, about 1 hour. In the afternoon the old town of Dali and the 📍 shore of Erhai Lake. Bai cooking by the water in the evening. | Dali | 🚄 approx. 1 h |
| 8 | Tue 3 Nov | Cangshan | 🥾📍 The Jade Belt Road on Cangshan: cable car to around 2,600 m, then some 11 km almost level along the eastern flank with a continuous view over Erhai Lake. The most beautiful trail of the trip that costs no effort. | Dali | Cable car, on foot |
| 9 | Wed 4 Nov | Erhai or Shaxi | 🚲 Option A: ride the eco-corridor along the eastern shore of Erhai to Xizhou, a Bai village with a market and indigo workshops. 🧭 Option B: day trip to Shaxi, the best-preserved market town on the Tea Horse Road. | Dali | Bicycle or bus |
| 10 | Thu 5 Nov | 🚄 → Kunming | 🚄 Back to Kunming, about 2 hours. In the afternoon Green Lake Park and the old quarter around the flower and bird market. Stay near the South Station, the Guilin train leaves early. | Kunming | 🚄 approx. 2 h |
| 11 | Fri 6 Nov | 🚄 → Guilin | 🚄 The big rail leg east: Kunming → Guilin, fastest G train about 4.5 h, the line runs through Guizhou karst. 📍 First karst towers on the edge of Guilin in the afternoon, dinner by the Li River. | Guilin | 🚄 approx. 5 h |
| 12 | Sat 7 Nov | Li River → Yangshuo | 🛶📍 Boat trip on the Li River from Guilin or Yangdi to Xingping – the most famous river landscape in China, the backdrop of the 20-yuan note. On to Yangshuo, lodging by the Yulong River rather than on West Street. | Yangshuo | 🛶 + bus |
| 13 | Sun 8 Nov | Yangshuo & Xingping | 🧭🥾📍 Two things on one relaxed day: in the morning the short, steep ladder climb up Laozhai Shan above Xingping - the river bend from the 20-yuan note, before the tour boats. In the afternoon climbing with a local guide at Moon Hill, or a bike tour through the karst fields along the Yulong. Everything sits close together, none of it is a rush. | Yangshuo | Bus, bicycle |
| 14 | Mon 9 Nov | 🚗 → Longji | 🚗 Drive to the Longji rice terraces near Longsheng. 📍 In the afternoon the terrace view over Ping'an or Dazhai; after the November harvest the tiers lie golden and straw-coloured. Overnight in a Zhuang or Yao village up on the ridge. | Dazhai (Longji) | 🚗 approx. 3 h |
| 15 | Tue 10 Nov | Longji → Guilin | 🥾📍 In the morning the terrace loop between the villages, then 🚗 back to Guilin. In the afternoon time for the city: Elephant Trunk Hill on the Li, a teahouse, last errands before the coastal leg. | Guilin | 🚗 approx. 3 h |
| 16 | Wed 11 Nov | 🚄 → Shenzhen | 🚄 Guilin → Shenzhen North, direct G train about 3 hours - the clean rail link to the coast that holds this route together. Arrive in the afternoon, in the evening 🎶 OIL in Chegongmiao: the region's most reliable club. | Shenzhen | 🚄 approx. 3 h |
| 17 | Thu 12 Nov | Shenzhen | 🧭 A second day on the coast, deliberately without a rush: the new city on foot - Shenzhen's design and coffee quarter around OCT-LOFT, the waterfront Talent Park, or a side trip to Shekou. Anyone out late at OIL the night before sleeps in. A buffer before Hong Kong and the festival. | Shenzhen | Metro, on foot |
| 18 | Fri 13 Nov | 🛂 → Hong Kong | 🛂 Cross the border into Hong Kong in the morning – from Shenzhen the shortest entry. In the afternoon the city: Star Ferry, Sham Shui Po, or 🥾 Dragon's Back with a swim at Big Wave Bay. In the evening 🎶 Sheung Wan and Kwun Tong. | Hong Kong | 🛂 border + MTR |
| 19 | Sat 14 Nov | 🎶 Hong Kong / Yuen Long | 🎶🎶 Shi Fu Miz Festival at the Tai Tong Organic EcoPark, Yuen Long, 12:00 to 04:00, four stages – date and line-up confirmed, see Route 4. If you would rather hike: Lantau or Sharp Peak in Sai Kung. | Hong Kong | MTR + bus |
| 20 | Sun 15 Nov | Hong Kong | Dim sum in Sham Shui Po, the Star Ferry, then Airport Express. Onward flight from Hong Kong as planned. If the connecting ticket is flexible: day 20 is the best candidate to drop. | — | Airport Express |

📉 Altitude profile – a single mountain week, then flat
Kunming 1,890 m → Shangri-La 3,200 m (2 nights) → gorge 1,800–2,670 m → Lijiang 2,400 m → Dali 1,970 m → Kunming 1,890 m → Guilin, Yangshuo, Longji all below 1,000 m → coast. The only real altitude point is Shangri-La, and it arrives by a short flight on day 2 – see the warning there.
Geography
Map
First the northern Yunnan loop around Shangri-La, then the long eastern axis via Kunming and Guilin to the coast. The Amap button below marks every stop and works inside China too.
In China: the Amap link works behind the firewall. Google Maps is blocked on the mainland and OpenStreetMap is unreliable – background, app tips and offline maps.
🚗 Driving and transfer legs individually in Amap – with a drawn route
The button above only places markers, no line. Route lines come from the navigation links below – everything else on this route is rail and would otherwise be computed by Amap as a wrong car journey.

The core programme
🥾 Hiking and viewpoints
One serious trek in the first week, then karst trails that are more view than effort. Exactly the dosage the objection called for.
Tiger Leaping Gorge, High Trail
Difficulty: moderate to hard – the route's fitness test. Stage 1 opens with the 28 bends: about 900 m of ascent in one push up to 2,670 m. Muscularly demanding, but with no altitude problem and no exposure.
Stage 2 is shorter and prettier: a balcony trail to Tina's, then the descent via ladders and chains to Tiger Leaping Stone at the Yangtze. 📍 The view from the open flank between Halfway and Tina's onto the north face of Jade Dragon is the strongest image of the mountain week.
Cangshan, Jade Belt Road
Difficulty: low. Cable car to around 2,600 m, then some 11 km almost level along the eastern flank of the range. Rock wall on your left, Erhai Lake and the old town of Dali 600 metres below on your right.
📍 Several built viewpoints, teahouses along the way, get on or off at two cable car stations. After the High Trail, the right dose.
Laozhai Shan above Xingping
Difficulty: short and steep. Twenty to thirty minutes on steps and metal ladders, partly exposed. At the top 📍 the classic view of the Li River bend shown on the 20-yuan note.
Go up before eight in the morning: haze lies in the valley, the boats are not running yet, and you often have the summit to yourself.
Yangshuo karst on foot and by bike
Difficulty: low to moderate. Around Yangshuo flat paths and cycle routes run between the limestone towers, finest along the Yulong River away from the main towns. Moon Hill is a short, steep climb to a see-through rock arch.
For climbers: Yangshuo is China's sport-climbing centre, the sectors are reachable with a local guide in a day – October to December is high season.
Longji rice terraces
Difficulty: low. Between the villages of Ping'an and Dazhai paved terrace paths lead to several viewpoints, 2–4 hours as you like. 📍 After the November harvest the tiers stand golden and straw-coloured rather than green.
Staying up top pays off: sunrise and sunset over the terraces, once the day visitors are gone, are the real reason for the night in the village.
Hong Kong to finish
Dragon's Back, 8.5 km of ridge path with views of Shek O and the southern islands, then into the water at Big Wave Bay.
After a festival night that ran until four, that is the ambitious option – the honest one is dim sum in Sham Shui Po and the Star Ferry.
Substance over sights
🧭 Off the beaten path
Napahai, not just the old town
Most people stay in Dukezong. The plain around the Napahai wetland can be ridden flat by bike; from mid-November the first black-necked cranes stand in the fields, with Songzanlin on the slope behind. A quiet afternoon almost nobody plans.
Shaxi on the Tea Horse Road
Two and a half hours north of Dali sits Shaxi, the best-preserved market town on the old Tea Horse Road: a cobbled square, a theatre, a temple, fields all around. The same substance as Lijiang, a tenth of the visitors.
Yulong River instead of West Street
Yangshuo's West Street is a scrum at night. Stay by the Yulong River instead and you have karst cones at the door, bamboo rafts without engine noise and village guesthouses with a view. Reachable by bike by day, quiet at night.
Sleep in a Longji village
The terraces are a day-trip target – which is exactly why the night up top is worth it. After 5 pm the viewpoints empty, the Zhuang and Yao guesthouses cook with whatever is there, and in the morning mist lies in the tiers before the buses come.
Li River without the big ferry
The large tour boats run Guilin → Yangdi in convoy. Far nicer is the lower section Yangdi → Xingping by bamboo raft or small boat: the same scenery but close to the water and without deck loudspeakers.
Yuen Long instead of Central
Because the festival is in Yuen Long, we sleep in the north-west rather than on Hong Kong Island. Night markets, noodle shops and prices nobody on the island would believe – and after the festival twenty minutes to bed instead of an hour and a half.
Evenings
🎶 Nightlife on this route
Not a scene route, but a good finish: quiet mountain evenings, then Yangshuo as a lively backpacker town, a club night in Shenzhen and the festival in Hong Kong.
🎶 Shi Fu Miz Festival · Saturday 14 Nov 2026 · day 19
Four stages at the Tai Tong Organic EcoPark in Yuen Long, 12:00 to 04:00: house and disco on the meadow, techno on the Valley Stage until four, UK bass by the pond, ambient to close. Date, venue and line-up confirmed, tickets on sale. From Shenzhen the shortest approach of any route. Stages, line-up and ticket link in Route 4.
Source: Mixmag Asia, 15 Jun 2026, and shifumiz.com. Checked 4 Oct 2026.Shangri-La & Lijiang 🎶 days 2–6
No club, but old-town bars: in Dukezong live music with guitar and Tibetan singing around Sifang Square, in Lijiang a loud, very touristy bar street along the canal. Good for a beer, not for more – ⚠️ in Shangri-La on arrival day no alcohol anyway because of the altitude.
Dali 🎶 days 7–9
Away from the loud main lane, Dali has a small and surprisingly international scene of cafés, craft beer places and courtyards with live music – for years the place where Chinese dropouts get stuck. No techno, but pleasant evenings.
Yangshuo 🎶 days 12–13
Yangshuo is the liveliest spot on the route before the coast: climber bars, live music and an international scene that gathers along the road to Baisha in the evening. Good for contacts and sector tips, not for electronic music.
Shenzhen & Hong Kong 🎶 days 16–19
The strong stretch. In Shenzhen OIL in Chegongmiao, one of the few clubs in Asia with genuine reference status; in Hong Kong 宀 Club, Studio Duplex and the secret-warehouse series in Kwun Tong, whose address drops only the day before. Then the festival on Saturday.

Logistics
🚄 Transport analysis
The principle of this route: a single feeder flight, then everything on rails. No multi-day driver, no return surcharge, no mountain-road risk.
✈️ The one flight: Kunming → Shangri-La
About 1 h 20, several times a day (Lucky Air, China Eastern). Shangri-La (DIG) has no direct flights from Europe, so the international flight lands in Kunming anyway – which makes the feeder not an extra flight but the only domestic one of the trip. Take a morning flight so the afternoon at 3,200 m is free to rest.
🚄 Everything else: high speed and local transport
Yunnan is fully covered by HSR; the Kunming → Guilin → Shenzhen → Hong Kong axis is one of the most comfortable rail links in China. Within the mountain week, short local transfers (Shangri-La → Qiaotou, Tina's → Lijiang) and the Li River boats replace the driver. No multi-day 包车 needed.
| Section | Mode | Duration | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kunming → Shangri-La | ✈️ flight | approx. 1 h 20 | Lucky Air, China Eastern. The only flight of the route. |
| Shangri-La → Qiaotou | 🚗 transfer | approx. 3 h | Around 200 km to the trailhead. Local driver or bus. |
| Tina's → Lijiang | 🚗 minibus | approx. 2 h | Shared taxis and minibuses run regularly in the afternoon. |
| Lijiang → Dali | 🚄 HSR | approx. 1 h | Frequent, second class cheap. |
| Dali → Kunming | 🚄 HSR | approx. 2 h | Several times a day to the South Station. |
| Kunming → Guilin | 🚄 HSR | approx. 4.5–8 h | Fastest G train about 4.5 h; several D trains longer. Book early, secure a seat. |
| Guilin → Yangshuo | 🛶 boat + bus | half a day | Li River boat trip with onward transfer; alternatively HSR Guilin → Yangshuo ~1.5 h. |
| Yangshuo → Longji | 🚗 driver/bus | approx. 3 h | Around 150 km via Guilin. Terrace shuttle at the village entrance. |
| Longji → Guilin | 🚗 bus | approx. 3 h | Back to the station for the coastal leg. |
| Guilin → Shenzhen North | 🚄 HSR | approx. 3 h | 10 pairs a day, direct G train. The clean coastal link. |
| Shenzhen → Hong Kong | 🛂 border + MTR | approx. 1–1.5 h | Via Futian/Lok Ma Chau or West Kowloon. Passport check both sides. |
🚄 Why only one flight instead of two
Compared with Route 8, the entire western Sichuan block and its Chengdu feeder are gone, and the Dali → Shenzhen flight is replaced by the rail axis Kunming → Guilin → Shenzhen. The price is one long rail leg Kunming → Guilin; the gain is one flight fewer, the karst change of scenery and the Longji rice terraces.
Mandatory check
🛂 Border and permit check
🛂 No Tibet permit needed
Shangri-La lies in Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan – a Tibetan area, but not the Tibet Autonomous Region. For foreign nationals: no Tibet Travel Permit, no obligatory guided group, free movement. Authorities can restrict access to Tibetan prefectures at short notice – rare, but possible.
Permit situation: tibettravel.org. Short-notice restrictions: UK FCDO travel advice. Checked 4 Oct 2026.🛂 Entering China
No visa required. German nationals enter visa-free for up to 30 days per entry; the unilateral visa exemption applies until 24:00 on 31 Dec 2026. Carry a valid ordinary passport, hotel bookings and the onward flight ticket from Hong Kong as evidence of purpose of travel.
Sources: Chinese Consulate General Hamburg (4 Nov 2025); FAQs on Visa-free Entry into China, as of 21 May 2026. Verify again before departure.🛂 Mainland → Hong Kong on day 18
Hong Kong is a separate immigration area: German nationals enter visa-free for up to 90 days. Crossing from Shenzhen is an exit from the mainland plus a separate entry into Hong Kong – two checks, both usually quick. Because Hong Kong is the end, re-entry into China does not matter.
