Route 4 · Scene, nightlife & border crossing

Techno Axis & Vietnam

The route built around the evenings. Halloween Saturday in Chongqing, a border crossing on foot over the Friendship Pass, five nights in Hanoi, OIL in Shenzhen – and as the finale the Shi Fu Miz Festival in Hong Kong on 14 November, date and line-up confirmed.

  • 🥾 Difficulty 2 / 5
  • 🎶 Festival confirmed
  • 🛂 Vietnam, visa-free
  • 🚗 Driver 2 days
  • ✈️ no domestic flight
  • 💶 €2,000–2,500 p.p.
  • Entry: Chengdu

The character of this route

This route inverts the usual logic: the days of the week set the schedule, not the daytime programme. 31 October is a Saturday – Halloween has become the biggest night out of the Chinese autumn, and here it lands on Chongqing. 6 and 7 November are a Friday and a Saturday – those land on Hanoi. 14 November is a Saturday – and that is the day Shi Fu Miz runs in Hong Kong.

In between sits the real adventure: a border crossing on foot over the Friendship Pass from Guangxi into Vietnam, with a stop at the Detian Waterfall, which forms the border itself. And the return to China, which is unproblematic thanks to the officially confirmed multiple-entry rule.

Physically this is the second-easiest route. That is deliberate: anyone out until four in the morning four times in three weeks does not need 5,000-metre peaks on top.

📊 The route in numbers

🛂 The decisive legal question is settled

The official FAQ of the Chinese foreign ministry states explicitly in Question 12: the visa exemption permits multiple entries, and there is currently no limit on the number of entries or on the total number of days of stay. Travelling out to Vietnam and back in therefore costs neither a visa nor a fee – the 30-day clock starts again on re-entry.

💡 A neat side effect

On the Dragon Stage plays Oil Soundsystem – the collective of the Shenzhen club OIL, where you will be standing on day 14 or 15 of this route anyway. Go there and you will already know faces on festival Saturday. That is exactly the kind of connection a scene route is made for.

⚠️ There is no psytrance festival in the travel window

So that no false expectation builds up here: Shi Fu Miz is house, techno, bass and ambient – not Goa. China's only established psytrance festival, Spirit Tribe in Yunnan, always ran around Qingming in April; a 2026 edition cannot be found. In northern Vietnam the Quest Festival would traditionally have run in November, but a 2026 edition is not verifiable and is therefore not planned in here. The closest thing to the psychedelic direction is the Meadow Stage with ambient and the Valley Stage with hypnotic techno.

💡 If the onward flight is flexible

The festival ends at four in the morning on 15 November – the day of the onward flight. If the connecting ticket can be moved by a day or two, this is the place to do it. A rest day on the 15th and departure on the 16th turns a hard ending into a good one.

Geography

Map

From Sichuan south, over the land border into Vietnam, back into China and on to the delta.

In China: the Amap link works behind the firewall. Google Maps is blocked on the mainland and OpenStreetMap is unreliable – background, app tips and offline maps.

🚗 Driving legs individually in Amap – with a drawn route

The button above only places markers, no line: Amap's marker endpoint shows up to ten points but no track between them. A drawn route comes from the navigation endpoint – which however only takes a start, an end and one waypoint. So here are the driving legs one by one:

Driver legs only. Rail and flight sections are deliberately missing – Amap would compute them as a car journey and show wrong times.

The core of this route

🎶 Nightlife, city by city

Important up front: club landscapes in China and Vietnam change fast. What is written here was checked as of 29 Sept 2026 – with a clear separation between “confirmed active”, “status unclear” and “closed”.

⚠️ Two losses you need to know about

Chengdu: The city's two flagships are gone. .TAG, the rooftop techno club in the Poly Center that made Chengdu internationally known, was closed in 2025 – according to the operators' statement because official restrictions ended the parties at prime time and the model was no longer economically viable. AXIS Nightclub is now also listed as closed.

Hanoi: Savage, for years the centre of the Vietnamese underground scene and described by Mixmag as the “epicentre of an underground awakening”, announced in March 2025 that it faced closure because of a state construction project on the Quang An peninsula. The website was still online with a programme most recently – so the status is unclear, check at short notice.

Chengdu 🎶 days 1–3

Despite the closures, Chengdu remains the place with the densest scene in China. The centre of gravity has shifted from the big clubs to livehouses and smaller rooms. NU SPACE on Kuixinglou Street, a 450-capacity venue, is the best known of this new generation.

Practicalities: The areas are Jiuyanqiao and Yulin. Entry is usually RMB 60–120. Pull concrete addresses two weeks beforehand from Resident Advisor – in Chengdu, places appear faster than guidebooks can record them.

Chongqing 🎶 days 4–5

Not an underground capital, but on Halloween Saturday that is irrelevant: Jiefangbei and Guanyinqiao are in a complete state of emergency by then. Large-format clubs, plenty of EDM, serious effort put into the costumes. If you would rather have techno rooms, there are smaller places around the Jiaochangkou area.

Hanoi 🎶 days 8–12

Hanoi is the surprise of this route. The scene is concentrated in the expat and creative district of Tay Ho on West Lake. Confirmed active is FACTORY47, which turns up regularly in the scene press in 2026 with techno and house nights.

Five nights in Hanoi mean Friday and Saturday – that is the reason for the length of the stay. Drinks cost a fraction of Chinese prices, and the evenings run long.

Shenzhen 🎶 days 14–15

This is where the most important club of the route sits: OIL in Chegongmiao, Futian District. Mixmag Asia describes it as one of the few clubs in Asia that last long enough to become a genuine reference point – in 2026 it celebrated its eighth year.

The fact that Oil Soundsystem plays the Dragon Stage at Shi Fu Miz four days later makes the evening the ideal warm-up.

Hong Kong 🎶 days 16–19

The densest selection of the trip. Confirmed active in 2026, among others: 宀 (Mihn) Club on Des Voeux Road Central in Sheung Wan, Studio Duplex and the Distrikt series, which celebrated its fourth year in 2026.

Also typical of Hong Kong are secret warehouse parties, where the address is only announced the day before – usually in Kwun Tong. Lan Kwai Fong is the wrong place for your profile.

What it costs

Chengdu / Chongqing
Entry RMB 60–120, beer RMB 40–60
Hanoi
Entry VND 150,000–300,000, beer from VND 40,000
Shenzhen
Entry RMB 80–150
Hong Kong club
Entry HK$150–250, drinks HK$90–140
Shi Fu Miz
from approx. HK$508 in the reference edition
Nightlife total
realistically €350–450 per person

🔎 Last-minute check – the most important paragraph on this page

Underground events in China only go public two to four weeks beforehand, often exclusively via the promoters' WeChat channels. Planning months ahead is structurally impossible. Concretely, from 13 October onwards:

And one WeChat reality: Many Chinese events can only be booked via QR codes in WeChat groups. Ask someone at the hostel or in the club and you get in – not by web search alone.

Venue research as of 29 Sept 2026.

By day

🥾 Hiking and viewpoints

No high mountains, but enough movement to balance out the nights.

Hang Mua, Ninh Binh

Difficulty: short and sweaty. Around 500 stone steps up a karst cone above the delta. 📍 At the top, the view over the rice fields and the river arms of Trang An – the best-known viewpoint in northern Vietnam and still worth every step. Go early; from ten it gets crowded.

Detian Waterfall

Difficulty: easy. The waterfall drops over several tiers across roughly 200 metres of width – half in China, half in Vietnam. 📍 The best view is from the Chinese viewing path in the morning. At boundary stone no. 53 you literally stand with one foot in each country.

Wutong Shan, Shenzhen

Difficulty: medium. 944 m, three to four hours on made paths, very popular with locals in the early morning. 📍 At the top, a view across the bay as far as Hong Kong.

Dragon's Back, Hong Kong

Difficulty: pleasant. 8.5 km of ridge path with views over Shek O and the southern islands, then into the water at Big Wave Bay. Exactly the right dose between two club nights.

Liziba and the levels of Chongqing

📍 Not a hike, but a city experience: the elevated railway runs through a residential block, metro exits sit twenty metres of altitude apart, and from the Raffles deck you can see how two rivers cut a peninsula out of tower blocks.

Optional instead of the festival

If you would rather not go to the festival on day 19: Sharp Peak in Sai Kung, 468 m, brutally steep on loose scree, the hardest popular hike in Hong Kong. Our clear recommendation remains the festival, though – Sharp Peak is there every weekend, a tenth anniversary is not.

Beside the music

🧭 Off the beaten path

Staying the night at the border waterfall

Almost all visitors come to Detian as day trippers from Nanning. Sleep there and you have the waterfall almost to yourself in the evening and early morning – and you see the Vietnamese side backlit.

On foot across the land border

The Friendship Pass is not a sight, it is everyday infrastructure: columns of lorries, money changers, porters with handcarts. Crossing a border on foot explains more about the region than any museum.

Motorbike tour in Hanoi

Don't ride yourself – sit on the back. Local riders offer half-day tours through districts no tourist reaches: the flower market at five in the morning, the railway street, workshop alleys.

Bia hoi instead of a bar

Fresh draught beer for the equivalent of under a euro, on plastic stools at the roadside, from late afternoon onwards. Northern Vietnam's social institution.

Huaqiangbei, Shenzhen

The largest electronics market in the world: floors full of individual components, repair stalls, clone devices. For two travellers who like technology, an afternoon lost in the best sense.

Yuen Long before the festival

The festival site lies in the New Territories, a long way from the postcard. Arrive early and you see a different Hong Kong: village temples, fish ponds, market halls. Between Tai Tong and Long Ping there is more province than metropolis.

The heart of the logistics

🛂 Border crossing check: China ↔ Vietnam

Two land border crossings on day 8 and day 13. Both are visa-free for German nationals – that is the reason this route works.

1. Visa status for German nationals

China
No visa. Visa-free entry for up to 30 days per entry. The unilateral visa exemption applies to Germany until 24:00 on 31 Dec 2026.
Multiple entry
Explicitly permitted. The official FAQ answers in Question 12: multiple visa-free entries are possible, currently with no limit on the number of entries or on the total number of days of stay. The 30-day period counts from the day after entry and starts again on re-entry.
Land borders
Included. FAQ Question 9: the visa exemption applies at all sea, land and air border crossings open to foreigners – so at the Friendship Pass too.
Vietnam
No visa. Visa-free for up to 45 days per entry, regardless of the purpose of travel. Basis: Resolution 44/NQ-CP, valid from 15 Mar 2025 to 14 Mar 2028. No prior registration, no fee.
Hong Kong
No visa. A separate entry jurisdiction, up to 90 days.
Sources: Consulate General of the PRC in Hamburg, notice of 4 Nov 2025; FAQs on Visa-free Entry into China, as of 21 May 2026; Vietnam Tourism and the Vietnamese embassy on Resolution 44/NQ-CP. Checked on 29 Sept 2026 – verify again three days before departure without fail.

2. Border crossing and procedure

The crossing used is the Friendship Pass (友谊关, Youyi Guan) near Pingxiang in Guangxi, on the Vietnamese side Huu Nghi near Dong Dang in Lang Son province. This is the main land crossing between the two countries.

  1. Travel to Pingxiang. Since December 2025 there has been a high-speed rail link Nanning–Pingxiang with a journey time of about 1.5 hours; in addition a slow train runs daily from Nanning at 18:05 taking about 4 hours.
  2. From Pingxiang station by taxi or bus to the Youyiguan border terminal, approx. 20 minutes.
  3. Chinese exit control. Then cross the border strip – on foot or by shuttle vehicle.
  4. Vietnamese entry control at Huu Nghi. As Germans, without a visa, a stamp in the passport.
  5. On by minibus or bus to Hanoi: about 3.5 to 4 hours, costing from roughly VND 70,000.

Alternatives that also work: An international direct bus Nanning–Hanoi leaves from the bus terminal opposite Langdong Bus Station and handles the border with the whole bus – that is the least stressful option. The international train Nanning–Hanoi is running again, takes around 12 hours with a change in Pingxiang, but cannot be booked online: tickets are only available in person at the counter in Nanning on presentation of the original passport.

3. ⚠️ Time needed and the one time of day that matters

Arrive at the border before 16:30. After that, foreign passports are no longer stamped at this crossing. This is the single most critical point of this route – miss the bus and you spend the night in Pingxiang.

Border formalities
in normal operation 45–90 minutes for both sides together
Peak times
longer in the mornings and at weekends; lorry traffic jams the approach
Realistic day planning
Detian → Pingxiang → border → Hanoi is a whole day, approx. 9 hours. Plan nothing for the evening.
Return leg, day 13
likewise a whole day, approx. 8 hours to Nanning
Time zone
Vietnam is one hour behind China – on the way back you lose an hour, you don't gain one

What to carry: a passport with sufficient validity, printed hotel bookings for China and Vietnam plus the onward flight ticket out of Hong Kong. The Chinese FAQ explicitly recommends this evidence, and at land borders it is asked for far more often than at the airport. Cash in small notes for buses and changing money.

4. Does the detour make returning to China harder?

No. This is the question that normally sinks routes like this, and here it is unambiguously settled: according to the official FAQ the visa exemption permits multiple entries with no limit on the number, and on re-entry a fresh 30-day period begins. There is no visa, no fee and no prior registration involved.

What still applies: the decision on entry is always taken by the border authority on the spot. The purpose of travel has to match the permitted purposes – tourism does. So carry the evidence and state the purpose simply and consistently. And because visa rules can change at short notice: check the official pages once more three days before departure.

5. Is the effort worth it?

Let's do the honest sums: the detour costs two full travel days for the border crossings. In return you get five nights in Hanoi with two weekend evenings, a completely different cuisine, distinctly lower prices, the Detian Waterfall and a land border crossing on foot. For a route built around evenings and variety, that is a good trade. For a nature route it would not be – which is why it sits here and not in Route 1.

Logistics

🚗🚄 Transport analysis

🚗 A driver for two days only – nothing more is needed

The only stretch without a sensible rail connection is Nanning → Detian → Pingxiang. For that, 包车, a car with a driver, RMB 600–1,000 per day (approx. €75–130), split between two. The driver takes you right to the border terminal, which makes the border day considerably more relaxed.

🚗 Driving yourself: no – and across the border, never

China recognises neither the German nor the international driving licence. Quite apart from that, a Chinese hire car cannot be taken out into Vietnam; private vehicles are subject to their own customs and permit procedures. The border crossing happens on foot or on a scheduled bus, never in your own hire car.

Hanoi → NanningBus + 🛂 + 🚄approx. 8 h The international direct bus from Langdong is the most robust option. High-speed rail link Pingxiang–Nanning since December 2025, approx. 1.5 h.

🚄 Why no domestic flight

There are flights Chengdu–Nanning and Hanoi–Shenzhen that save time on paper. In reality every flight costs two transfers, one security check and the lead time – and on this route the border crossing on foot is not a detour but an item on the programme. So everything stays on the ground.

🎒 Kit

  • Festival-capable shoes and a light jacket – Tai Tong gets cool at night
  • Earplugs, seven club nights
  • Rain protection; in the delta it can pour briefly
  • Printed hotel bookings and onward flight ticket for the land border
  • Two payment worlds: Alipay and WeChat Pay for China, cash and card for Vietnam
  • eSIM with roaming – no problem in Vietnam and Hong Kong anyway
  • Small backpack, many clubs have no cloakroom

⚠️ A realistic expectation of Chinese nightlife

Clubs in China can be closed at short notice – official restrictions, noise rules, refurbishment. That is not the exception but part of the scene; the .TAG case shows it. So plan two options per city and treat the festival in Hong Kong as the one event that will definitely happen.
